This was only a year after the release of Steve Vai’s debut solo album in 1984. As stated in the opening paragraph, Steve Vai was recruited by David Lee Roth to join his band in 1985 to record the Eat ‘Em and Smile album. Six years would pass before Steve Vai released his second solo album entitled Passion and Warfare in 1990. While some readers might find it odd that it took Steve Vai six years to release his second solo album, they are probably unaware of all the other projects Steve Vai became involved in during the 1980’s.
It was a brilliant debut album that showcased a young amazing talent that had an incredible future ahead of himself in the music business. The album featured over twenty musicians performing music that was clearly inspired by the work of Frank Zappa. Steve Vai released his first solo album in 1984 entitled Flex-Able. Many people believe, including this writer, that Frank Zappa was the greatest musical mind of the 20th Century. For any modern musician joining Frank Zappa’s band would be the equivalent of a string player in the 18th Century being asked to perform on a nightly basis with Beethoven. Eventually, Steve Vai would join Frank Zappa’s band and tour and record with Frank Zappa from 1980 to 1983. In 2018, McRocklin was invited to write and perform guitars on Gunship's The Video Game Champion. McRocklin also formed the Shredwave band McRocklin & Hutch, which is inspired by 1980s rock, cult movies and 21st-century tech. He produced a guitar-based EP entitled New Beginnings and quickly gained a large following on Instagram, Facebook and YouTube. He also became more involved in the production side of music which led to becoming a mastering engineer and also fueled his interest in electronic genres of music, which took him away from the guitar.Īlmost 20 years later, McRocklin is back in the guitar scene and producing new music.
B4G released an album which was co-written and produced by Steve Vai.ĭuring this time McRocklin also joined Zakk Wylde, Steve Lukather, Stuart Hamm and others on stage for the Jason Becker Benefit concert.Īfter returning to the UK, he released his own solo album 91-95. documentary Legends of the Guitar presented by Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, at the age of 11, along with other guitar greats.Īs the youngest person to be signed to Interscope Records at the time, the band Bad4Good (B4G) was formed around him. McRocklin also featured in the Warner Bros. Steve Vai used this guitar on his Passion and Warfare album. During this time, McRocklin was gifted the 'Holy Grail' of guitars, the one-of-a-kind custom-made Ibanez 7-String Universe. McRocklin went on to star in Steve Vai's music video "The Audience is Listening" and Vai became a close friend and mentor to him. His first big break came when he opened for Ozzy Osbourne in his hometown of Newcastle upon Tyne, at just eight years old. By the time he was seven, he was performing onstage. McRocklin started playing the guitar at the age of four.
