Until I leave Iron Mike's for the late game camps I run the Fire Axe because it has the highest damage of all early game melee weapons. If you're exploring and looking for loot, which you should be doing anyway, they're all over the place. I don't know exactly where they spawn because I never use the Sawblade Axe.
